More than just words!
Your language is more than just words. It's your metaphors, common sense, feelings, gut instinct, gestures and body language. It's the limits of your imagination.
We help you to reflect on your language and:
improve the quality of your decisions
enhance your risk maturity
develop listening and observation skills
discover new ways of resolving recurring problems
make reflective decision making a habit
sharpen your culture intelligence
adopt a pro-active approach to risk management
live, flourish and enhance your wellness
How we work
Our work draws upon Social Psychology of Risk (SPoR) meaning that how do human beings make decisions in a social environment. We focus upon:
the power of unconscious mind in human decision making
the significance of people and relationships in understanding and improving organisational culture
Two key concepts that underpin our work:
1
One Brain Three Minds™
This triarchic model and the speedometer seeks to understand how the human Mind ‘thinks’. It allows us to understand the automaticity of human decision making and the slow, rational mode of decision making and thinking.
Slow, methodical, systematic, and rational thinking.
‘Learned shortcuts’, practiced habits, fast and efficient thinking
Decision-making based on patterns, ‘trial and error’, triggered by perception, experience and memory.
Automaticity, non-conscious decision making.
Gut thinking, intuitive thinking, auto pilot.
2
Workspace, Headspace, Groupspace
Our language consists of words and phrases in WorkSpace (physical and measurable), Headspace (psychological), and Groupspace (cultural). Observing and listening to our language makes us reflective and improves the quality of our decisions. Language is central to Social Psychology of Risk.
Workspace
Workspace
The physical language that seeks to understand the material and observable environment. Pressure, temperature, rain, snow, equipment, harm, injury etc.
Headspace
Headspace
The psychological language that seeks to understand how we think and decide individually as we engage with the task and the environment. Surprised, disappointed, confused, happy, hungry, angry etc.
Groupspace
Groupspace
The cultural language that seeks to understand how we think and decide collectively as we engage with the task, each other, and the environment. Normal practice, common sense, this is ok, we and them, bullying and caring, time pressure, punishment etc.
Much of the language in risk management is anchored in Workspace. What is measurable and accountable through checklists and statistics is easy to manage and regulate. Most walks, talks, ‘findings’, ‘causes’, and observations are physical (primary) in focus. And when things go wrong, our ‘gut’ reaction to manage risk is to do more audits, investigations, and fixing the physical stuff.
Nothing changes!
Tackle risk, don't manage safety
We take a holistic (ecosystems) approach i.e., learning to question, engage, and influence the Workspace (physical), Headspace (psychological) and Groupspace (cultural) dimensions of risk. That is the purpose of all SPoR methods and tools including our iCue™ engagement program.
The iCue engagement program™
Our iCue engagement program will help you to map conversations (events, accidents, risk assessments, board meetings and all forms of human interactions), visualise how humans make decisions (using a whiteboard) and surface the hidden biases and assumptions in your language. Practicing the iCue™ method will help you:
sharpen your risk maturity
improve your cultural intelligence
adopt a pro-active and balanced approach to risk management
