Observations & Conversations: Human Judgment, Decision Making and Managing Risk
This program is designed for managers, supervisors, leaders, auditors and investigators to give them a variety of practical tools and methods to better understand human judgment and decision making in high risk operations. The program focuses on improving our observation and conversation skills to better engage with people with the view to make leadership visits, audits and investigations less bureaucratic and more effective for managing the risk.
The program is based on Social Psychology of Risk and Decision Making.

Improving the quality of observations
2. The limitations of paperwork in managing risk
Methods and tools:
Aligning paperwork with its purpose to manage the risk
Preparing for work, debriefing and after action review
3. Understanding heuristics: Fast & efficient thinking
Methods and tools:
Understanding how experts make decisions
Influencing habits and heuristics (mental short-cuts)
4. How perception works
Methods and tools:
Managing the risk of people working alone
Cross checking; overconfidence; rush; and supervision skills
5. Recognising change in high risk operations
Methods and tools:
Observing and registering change
Improving observation skills to recognise change
6. Listening to words that matter
Methods and tools:
Listening to words that matter for decision making and risk
Improving listening skills
Practical details
The entire coursework is based on experiential learning (no lecturing, only role plays, experiments and interactive discussions).
Pocket cards for field visits, training manuals, readings and recorded videos will be made available to all the attendees.
If you miss an online session, you will have access to recorded (and password protected) videos.
We are a community of more than a hundred people online from around the world and from across sectors.
We meet on a regular basis online and at least once every year in person to share our experiences and have fun learning together.

Nippin AnandFounderNippin has a Masters degree in Economics, a PhD in Social Sciences and a fascination in Cultural Anthropology. Working as a seafarer and travelling the world from the age of seventeen gave Nippin the unique opportunity to meet people who think differently. This experience has informed much of his work to date, encouraging him to find deeper meaning, as well as learn and grow through every challenge he undertakes.
