Understanding and improving decision making
(Pathways to Cultural Intelligence)
Research shows that nearly all decision making is based on the quality of our conversations and yet, little attempt is made to understand and improve the quality of conversations in tackling risk.
In this workshop, we will be introduced to an intuitive and practical approach to mapping conversations with the view to promoting ‘shared understanding’ between people.
Session 1. What it takes to understand others?
- Why do we struggle to understand others?
- How we process meaning and arrive at a shared understanding?
- An exercise in metaphorical thinking
Session 2. I-thou and I-it
- Observing people talk and listen (watching videos)
- Observing our own selves in conversations
- How we relate with others?
Session 3. How we learn, unlearn and make decisions?
- Understanding how biases affect learning and decision making
- Why unlearning is the key to learning
- A working model for unlearning and learning
Session 4. How language influences decisions?
- Thinking, reading and listening metaphorically
- Layers of risk hidden in our language (metaphors)
- How language relates with decision making
Session 5. How to frame questions?
- Priming, pitching and framing
- How framing works
- Practical exercise to frame questions
Session 6. How to map conversations?
- Visual, relational and verbal mapping of decision making
- Practicing conversation mapping in groups of three (talker, listener and observer)
Session 7. Questions and reflections
- What did we learn?
- Where can we apply this thinking? (event learning, relationship building, risk assessment, strategy setting or any form of interaction)
The expected outcome
Everyone is different and so is their learning journey.
After 7 sessions, most of you will begin to listen much more than you presently do. Once you step in the I-thou, you will learn to feel from another person’s perspective.
The more you stay in the I-thou, the better you will get at listening, thinking and decision making.
There are currently more than a hundred people on this journey. Some of us make it a point to meet online every month at least once to practice listening and mapping conversations. So there will be ample opportunities to practice and learn with each other free of cost.
