Unit 1 Introduction to Social Psychology of Risk

This workshop is an introduction to Social Psychology of Risk. The workshop will introduce a range of visual methods and tools to help you understand how language provides a deep opportunity to understand and improve decision making and culture. 

What you will experience and learn:

  • How language influences decision making and culture change
  • How human beings make decisions
  • How a shift in language can influence our decisions and culture
  • How to map conversations to understand decision making

Visual mapping in practice

Session 1. Words matter 

  • An exercise on how language relates with decision making and culture
  • Surfacing the discourse (hidden power and meaning) in our conversation

 

Session 2. Talking, Listening and Observing

  • How to talk, listen and observe
  • How can we improve our listening skills

 

Session 3. Recognising biases in decision making

  • How biases affect learning and decision making
  • Why unlearning is the key to learning

 

Session 4. The Power of Framing

  • How to frame questions during interviews, audits and investigations
  • How framing helps us to unlearn and learn

 

Session 5 and 6. Visual methods for mapping events (risk assessments, incidents and more)

  • Practical exercises on mapping events to improve decision making and culture
  • Questions and reflections

Practical details

  • The first two sessions are offered for free (for those who want to check before they can commit). Please enter the code SPEAKUP during checkout to avail your space.
  • You will receive a Zoom link when you sign up for the workshop.
  • All the sessions will be recorded on Vimeo and you will receive a password protected recording of the videos.
  • If you miss a session, I will be make myself available 30 mins prior to the following session for a one-to-one discussion.
  • After each session, you will receive pdf copies of books and articles to deepen your understanding on the subject.
  • At any time during the six sessions if you feel that the course does not meet your expectations you are welcome to withdraw and you will be entitled to full refund (even at the end of the course).

Working as a seafarer and travelling the world from the age of seventeen gave Nippin the unique opportunity to meet people who think differently.
