Safety Culture Survey
Background
Many organizations write questionnaires and conduct surveys and call them Safety Culture assessment, but such an exercise hardly explains the culture, let alone Safety Culture.
Typically, employees receive a questionnaire; they then think through the most appropriate responses to the questions and often give back what they think their management is expecting from them. This ‘data’ is then processed, analysed and a report is produced. This is a rational, political, and a mechanical exercise. Yes, it is a survey but not a culture survey. Maybe a systems survey?
Survey Methodology
The MiProfile Survey is based on Social Psychology of Risk (SPoR). The Survey is designed to understand how people make decisions when they are faced with a novel situation, an incident, a surprise or a ‘turbulence.’ The knowledge about what people believe and how they respond in groups under pressure gives us an insight into collective sensemaking, implicit (gut) knowledge, cognitive dissonance and socio-psychological dynamics within the organisation.
The survey methodology consists of a carefully designed set of questions aimed at generating rapid responses from the participants. The idea of obtaining rapid responses is to assess the implicit (gut) and intuitive knowledge, flow, automaticity and mindfulness within the organisation. Can people really think when they are put under pressure? How far do they hold to their beliefs? Are they willing and prepared to learn from surprises and uncertain events?
The results from the survey are then coded, analysed and mapped to understand where the organization stands and where it intends to position itself moving forward.
